3 Types of Solar Panels and Their Advantages and Disadvantages

A solar panel uses the sun as the source of energy, which then powers your home’s electrical system. The initial cost might be costly at first, but it’s a great investment for the coming years. Types of Solar Panels

Monocrystalline  

The first type of solar panel system is monocrystalline, this is the technology that started the rise of solar panels. It was first introduced in the 1950s. The cells of the panel are cut from silicon in cylindrical shape. Each of these cells look like a wafer. When you combine all these cells, it will make up a panel.   

Since this panel is constructed from high-quality silicon, it has the highest performance rate in the industry. It makes wise use of space, so the power they yield per square foot is high. It also performs better in low light condition and has a life expectancy of 25 years.   

We only have one disadvantage of this panel, since it’s high-quality, expect it to be too costly. Its manufacturing process also produce waste. And once the temperature of the place increases, its performance decreases.   

Polycrystalline 

Polycrystalline is also manufactured from high-quality silicon like monocrystalline. The difference in the manufacturing process is that the silicon is poured into the mold to form the panels instead of cutting out shapes.  

The temperature rating of this panel is slightly lower than monocrystalline, but it’s only a minor difference. This panel is great for regular homeowners who want to install solar panels in their home. Upon production, polycrystalline also produces less waste.   

The disadvantage of this panel is that the efficiency is lower. It’s between 13 to 16% compare to monocrystalline which is 21%. This panel will also require a larger space to produce the desired electrical output which the monocrystalline can do in a small space.   

Thin Film 

Thin film solar panels are manufactured by putting down layers of photovoltaic element, like organic photovoltaic cells or amorphous silicon. This panel is lightweight compare to the first two types of panels. Conditions like low-light, obstructions and shading don’t hinder performance. Among the three, this is the most affordable option because it’s also mass produced.   

However, thin film panels have lots of disadvantages. It has a low performance rating which is about 7% or more. It will also use lots of space, so if you use it on commercial purposes it often works but for residential purposes it won’t work. Even though this panel is affordable, it also comes with support elements that you need to buy so the whole system is accommodated. It also doesn’t have a long warranty since it can easily succumb to the effects of weather.
